Did Mendeleev Dream the Periodic Table?

The story that Mendeleev saw a finished periodic table in a dream is not supported by his own records. The familiar anecdote comes from later recollections, not a first-person account. Mendeleev worked on classifying the elements over many years and continued revising the table after its 1869 publication.
