La Paz at high altitude
Central La Paz lies at about 3,650 m (12,000 ft) above sea level, and the city’s elevation varies greatly by neighborhood. For travelers arriving rapidly from low altitude, this elevation poses a risk of acute mountain sickness: the CDC lists headache, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea among common symptoms. Susceptibility varies, so it is not accurate to say every visitor becomes ill.
La Paz spreads high in the Andes.
