Ancient Syracuse in Sicily minted silver decadrachms worth ten drachmas. A coin dated around 400 BCE in the Alpha Bank collection shows a chariot crowned by the goddess Nike and, on the reverse, the nymph Arethusa among dolphins. Their large size gave engravers more room for elaborate artistic designs.
