From Chaturanga to Chess
The earliest certain references to Indian chaturanga date to around the sixth century. Its name is associated with four divisions of an army: infantry, cavalry, chariots, and elephants. The game spread to Persia, where it developed into chatrang, and later reached the Arabic-speaking world and Europe. The precise route and timing of its early changes remain topics of historical study.
