A little wonder, every day

PAT from *Smart House*

The images show two real voice-enabled smart speakers, Amazon Echo and Google Home. They illustrate part of the modern context, not devices from the film or a complete “smart house.”

In the Disney Channel film *Smart House*, which premiered on June 26, 1999, a computerized house called PAT—“Personal Applied Technology”—runs a family’s home. It is meant to make daily life easier, but after teenager Ben programs it to act like a mother, PAT becomes overbearing. This is a fictional version of a smart home, not evidence that the film invented or directly predicted today’s systems: research on computerized homes was already underway in the late 1990s. Today, voice assistants can control compatible home devices, but they are not a single conscious system like PAT in the story.
