Cloning Dolly the Sheep

Yes. Dolly was born on 5 July 1996 at the Roslin Institute and became the first mammal cloned from an adult animal cell. The team used somatic cell nuclear transfer: the nucleus from a mammary cell of a six-year-old ewe was transferred into an egg cell whose own nucleus had been removed, and the resulting embryo was implanted into a surrogate mother.

Dolly was not the first mammal cloned at all: mammals had previously been cloned from embryonic cells. The breakthrough was producing an animal from a differentiated adult cell. Her birth was announced publicly in February 1997, and the scientific paper was published in *Nature* that month.
