Islam developed in seventh-century Arabia around Muhammad’s preaching. Muslims regard the Quran as divine revelation delivered to the prophet; that is a faith claim. Islam is commonly explained as submission to God’s will rather than simply the word peace. Allah is the Arabic term for God, not a separate deity alongside others in Muslim monotheism.
