Emotional tears may be uniquely human

Humans shed tears in response to emotions; there is still no reliable evidence that other species produce emotional tears, although animals can tear up for physiological reasons. Crying is sometimes associated with relief or social support, but it is not a guaranteed way to relieve pain or anger. The widely repeated figure of “70 litres of tears in a lifetime” has no traceable scientific calculation.

Emotional crying has social and psychological aspects, but its effects vary.
