Alaska's flag, designed by a schoolboy
School student Benny Benson created the winning Alaska flag design in a territory-wide contest in 1926. The legislature adopted it on May 2, 1927; when Alaska became a state in 1959, the flag remained its official symbol. Sources differ on whether Benson was 13 or 14, so he is described here simply as a teenager.
