Forests under pressure

Forest areas continue to disappear, but the claim that humans have already destroyed 80% of all forests is not supported by current global accounting. FAO reports that forests covered about 31% of land in 2020; since 1990, roughly 420 million hectares were lost through conversion to other land uses. Net forest loss has slowed, but deforestation continues.
