A live giant squid (*Architeuthis*) was first photographed in its natural habitat on September 30, 2004, by Japanese researchers Tsunemi Kubodera and Kyoichi Mori near the Ogasawara Islands; they published their findings in 2005. In 2006, researchers first filmed a live squid after bringing it to the surface. Video of one in its natural habitat came later, in 2012. So 2006 marks the first video of a live specimen, not the first photograph. Giant squid are associated with deep water; sources often mention hundreds of metres and around 1 km, but that is not a precise range boundary for the species.
