Lava Flow Speed

Lava-flow fronts are sometimes compared with running speed, but that is not a universal rule. According to the USGS, basalt flow fronts typically advance at less than 1 km/h on gentle slopes and may reach about 10 km/h on steep slopes. Depending on the person, that is comparable to a slow run or fast jog.

In some steep channels and lava tubes, the lava itself can move faster than 30 km/h, but the speed inside a channel is not the same as the advance speed of the flow front. Speed depends on lava type and temperature, slope, eruption rate, and whether the lava is confined to a channel. The “hound” comparison is therefore only a rough analogy for certain cases, not a prediction for every eruption.
