USS Gerald R. Ford became the first ship equipped with EMALS, which accelerates aircraft using an electromagnetic catapult instead of steam. Electrical drive allows control of acceleration during launch; it does not mean aircraft take off using only their own engines. In 2025 testimony, the CBO cited a procurement cost of about $13.3 billion in nominal appropriations from 2001–2021. This is not the cost of the entire program or a directly comparable present-day price.
