In the MetaHIT project, researchers sequenced gut samples from 124 European adults and assembled a catalogue of 3.3 million non-redundant microbial genes. The pooled catalogue was about 150 times larger than the human gene complement. This is a result for the study group as a whole, not the number of genes or species in each individual person.
