By the end of 1969 ARPANET, developed with support from the U.S. agency ARPA, connected four research computer nodes. It used packet switching: data were divided into small units for transmission over a shared network. It was an important precursor of the internet, rather than the World Wide Web. Lawrence Roberts led ARPANET planning; packet networking also developed through independent work by Paul Baran, Donald Davies and other researchers. Attributing the entire technology to one inventor would be misleading.
