Cave Deposits as Climate Archives
Stalagmites and other speleothems grow in Chinese caves as minerals precipitate from water dripping through rock. Some Chinese samples preserve layers across hundreds of thousands of years: one cave record, for example, traces Asian monsoon history over roughly 640,000 years. Researchers measure oxygen and carbon isotope ratios, along with elemental composition, to reconstruct changes in precipitation, monsoon circulation, and cave conditions. These are indirect clues: isotope values depend not only on local rainfall amount but also on moisture source and atmospheric circulation.
