In April 1827, chemist and pharmacist John Walker began selling friction matches made with his own mixture in Stockton-on-Tees, England. His shop records survive in a museum daybook, which lists 23 sales in 1827, 76 in 1828, and 69 through September 1829. These are recorded sales, not a complete count of match production.
