The cultivated apple, Malus domestica, did not arise from one uniform set of tiny hard crabapples. A major progenitor is Central Asian Malus sieversii, with contributions from European Malus sylvestris and other species. Hybridization and selection continued shaping cultivated populations. A common name or fruit size alone cannot establish the genetic ancestor of every cultivar.
