Egypt was an important center of early Christian monasticism in the late third and fourth centuries. Anthony is associated with eremitic life and Pachomius with organized communal life. This concerns Christianity specifically; other religions’ monastic or ascetic practices have their own histories. One founder or single day does not describe the whole process.
