Crocodiles: close relatives of birds
Crocodilians are more closely related to birds than to lizards and snakes: crocodilians and birds are the only living branches of Archosauria. They share an archosaur ancestor that lived long before modern dinosaur groups appeared. Both groups have four-chambered hearts and some shared respiratory features, but their physiology is not identical—for example, birds have a complex system of air sacs.
