Singing Sand Dunes
Some sand dunes emit a low boom when dry sand slides down their slopes, a sound often called “singing dunes.” It accompanies avalanching grains and resonance in the sand; researchers have debated the precise mechanism and proposed different explanations. Historical accounts of travelers hearing the phenomenon go back centuries, as summarized in the scientific literature.
