According to Guinness World Records, Marcel Proust’s novel *In Search of Lost Time* (*À la recherche du temps perdu*) is the longest novel; its length is estimated at about 9,609,000 characters, counting spaces as well. This is an estimate of character count, not a reliably established word count: word totals can depend on the edition and counting method. The National Library of France describes the novel’s canonical edition as seven volumes published from 1913 to 1927. [1–3]
