In hot weather, a koala may press against a trunk or large branch. In a field study, koalas sat on tree trunks more often in hot conditions, and the measured trunks were cooler than the air. Contact with a cooler surface helps carry away some heat by conduction and may reduce the need for evaporative cooling; it is one strategy, not complete protection from overheating.
