A little wonder, every day

Squirrels escape by zigzagging

Sudden turns can throw a pursuer off course.

Listen to fact0:00 / —

When threatened by a predator, a squirrel may flee in a zigzag pattern: sudden turns make pursuit harder. The U.S. National Wildlife Federation describes this behavior. The source-list item named marmots, but the sources checked support the tactic for squirrels generally and tree squirrels, not specifically for marmots.
