A little wonder, every day

Goats recognize their own kids’ calls

AI-generated cover illustration: коза уважно повертається до козеняти, яке блеє; редакційна сцена пояснює материнське розпізнавання голосу й не зображує дослід. Походження: OpenAI image generation. Дата: 2026-10-20. Промпт: “Photorealistic vertical 4:5 editorial cover showing a mother goat and her very young kid standing close together in a calm farm pasture, the kid looking up and bleating while the mother turns attentively toward it, natural morning light, realistic animal anatomy and fur, quiet intimate composition. The image is an illustrative scene about how goat mothers can distinguish their own kid's call, not a depiction of the research experiment. No text, no humans, no dramatic distress.”
AI-згенерована ілюстрація кози, яка прислухається до козеняти за суцільною перегородкою, що закриває його від погляду; пояснювальна реконструкція, не точна схема експерименту. Походження: OpenAI image generation. Дата: 2026-10-20. Промпт: “Photorealistic vertical 4:5 editorial illustration of a mother goat in a quiet farm pen turning her ears and head toward the bleat of a young kid in a neighboring pen, with a solid wooden divider obscuring the kid from view. Soft natural barn light, calm animals, realistic anatomy, composition makes the listening response and blocked sightline clear. Illustrative reconstruction of an auditory recognition idea; not a depiction of the exact research apparatus or a real recorded experiment. No text, no logos, no distressed animals.”

Goat kids’ bleats have individual features. In one study, mothers just two days after giving birth responded more to their own kid’s bleat than to an unfamiliar kid’s, even when they could not see or smell it. So a bleat carries more than a generic sound: its features can contain individual information.
