Transforming Boris Karloff into the monster for the 1931 Frankenstein took hours of makeup. Makeup artist Jack Pierce applied prosthetics and paint, which also took considerable time to remove at day’s end. The heavy costume and physical scenes created strain; later accounts connect filming with Karloff’s back injury. Sources differ, so his later operations should not be attributed to one precisely proven cause.
