Genes, traits, and environment
Genes influence many physical traits and health risks, but many traits arise through interactions between genetic variation and the environment. Environmental conditions can also affect gene activity through epigenetic mechanisms without changing the DNA sequence. The contributions vary by trait and cannot be reduced to a simple “genes or environment” split. [1–3]
Traits are shaped by genes and environments, which often interact.
