In 1950, ethnographers Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen published an account of knowledge about the Sirius system attributed to Dogon and other communities in what was then French Sudan. In a 1991 field reassessment, Walter van Beek could not confirm the central role of Sirius described by Griaule. It is therefore inaccurate to generalize that all Dogon worship this star: this is a contested history of ethnographic accounts, not an established description of the beliefs of an entire people.
