Alexander Graham Bell died in Nova Scotia on 2 August 1922. The minute of telephone silence in the United States and Canada is associated with his funeral on 4 August, rather than the day he died. An archived historical account preserved by Library and Archives Canada reports that telephone service stopped for one minute during the burial; PBS also describes a nationwide minute of silence. It was a symbolic tribute to the inventor, rather than an ordinary technical outage.
