Star Wars and France’s last guillotine execution

Yes: when the first *Star Wars* film opened in France on 19 October 1977, France still used the guillotine for executions. The last such execution—and the last execution in France—was carried out on 10 September 1977, when Hamida Djandoubi was executed in Marseille. The two events were just 39 days apart. The illustration is AI-generated and does not show a real execution or historical photograph.

синтетична редакційна ілюстрація квитка до кінотеатру й календаря 1977 року із символічним силуетом гільйотини на тлі. Створено OpenAI image generation 12 жовтня 2026 року. Prompt: “Editorial illustration for a historical fact: a 1970s French cinema ticket reading no legible words beside a simple desk calendar showing autumn 1977, with a subtle small guillotine silhouette as a historical symbol in the background. Non-graphic, no people, no blood, no execution scene. Refined cultural magazine illustration, muted cinema red and paper cream palette, clearly illustrative, no text.” Це AI-графіка, не фотографія і не зображення реальної страти.
