A little wonder, every day
The two-dollar note is more than a souvenir
U.S. federal $2 legal tender note issued in 1862; first federal $2 bill per Commons description.
The US two-dollar note did not originate solely for the country’s bicentennial. The federal government first issued notes of this denomination in 1862. In 1976, the bicentennial brought a Federal Reserve note with a new reverse showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence. [1, 2]
This distinguishes the history of a denomination from the history of a particular design. The anniversary prompted a redesigned return of the two-dollar note, but did not make every example a collectible rarity. A denomination or design date alone does not establish a particular note’s scarcity. [1, 2]
