Clock Genes in Hair Follicles
Hair follicle cells contain RNA that researchers can use to measure daily oscillations in circadian clock gene expression, including PER3 and NR1D2. In small studies, the phase of these signals was associated with individual rhythms and wake time. This is a marker of a peripheral clock, not evidence that hair consciously “knows” when someone is asleep. [1–2]
Hair follicles show daily oscillations in clock-gene expression.
