Chimborazo and the Moon

Ecuador’s Chimborazo is often described as the point on Earth closest to space—and, in popular retellings, to the Moon. The precise claim is that Chimborazo’s summit is the point on Earth’s surface farthest from Earth’s center, largely because of the equatorial bulge. That does not make it permanently the closest point to the Moon: distance to the Moon depends on the Moon’s position in the sky and its orbit.
