A little wonder, every day
A many-legged name is not a leg count

Centipedes, Chilopoda, normally develop an odd number of walking-leg pairs. Exactly forty legs would mean twenty pairs and would not fit this rule; an individual losing legs is a different issue. Centipedes should not be confused with millipedes: Eumillipes persephone was described in 2021 with over a thousand legs. The original “30–354 pairs” range for all myriapods is incorrect.
