A Hurrian Hymn From Ugarit
Clay tablet h.6 from Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra, Syria), dated to around the 14th century BCE, preserves a Hurrian hymn and musical instructions in cuneiform. It is often described more cautiously as the oldest known substantially complete record of notated music, rather than simply “the oldest song.” Scholars have read the signs and reconstructed the sound in different ways. Modern performances are therefore reconstructions, not certain reproductions of how the hymn sounded in antiquity.
