A little wonder, every day

Fissioning one gram of uranium-235 releases energy comparable to several tonnes of coal

One gram of U-235 equals several tonnes of coal if fully fissioned.

Listen to fact0:00 / —

If one gram of uranium-235 were completely fissioned, it would release about 8 × 10¹⁰ joules of energy — roughly the energy in 3–4 tonnes of coal. This is a theoretical comparison for complete fission of pure U-235, not a claim about a gram of natural uranium or a real power plant.
