Eratosthenes and “geography”

Eratosthenes of Cyrene is often called the father of geography: in the third century BCE he produced one of the earliest systematic geographical treatises, known as the *Geographika*. Historians of science also credit him with introducing the term “geography.” This is a historical shorthand: the ancient treatise survives only in fragments, and much of what we know comes through later authors.
