"Cosmic Latte": The Average Color of Galaxy Light

“Cosmic latte” is the playful name for a warm beige-white shade obtained by averaging the galaxy-light spectrum in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey sample. It is not literally the color of the entire universe: the result depends on the sample, averaging method, and how human vision perceives the spectrum.

Synthetic depiction of “cosmic latte”; not a photograph of the universe.
