The Gluteus Maximus
The gluteus maximus is commonly described as the largest single muscle in the human body. Its main action is extending the thigh at the hip; it helps a person rise from a chair, climb stairs, run, and control the trunk during movement. Maintaining upright posture is a coordinated task involving many muscles, not this muscle alone.
