Popov and Radiotelegraphy

Alexander Popov was a pioneer of radio communication and developed a receiver for electromagnetic signals, but saying he alone “created radiotelegraphy” oversimplifies the invention’s shared history. In 1895, Popov publicly demonstrated an apparatus for detecting and recording electrical oscillations, initially as a lightning detector. In March 1896, he transmitted a wireless Morse signal between university buildings.

At the same time, Guglielmo Marconi and other experimenters were developing practical wireless telegraph systems. Historians of technology treat radio as the result of contributions by many people; Popov was an important pioneer, but sole authorship of radiotelegraphy is neither exclusive nor universally accepted.
