Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole hospital in Saint-Rémy in southern France. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, which holds the painting, dates it to June 1889. He spent approximately a year at the hospital and continued working there.

The picture draws on observations of the sky from his window, but is not an exact record of one view. MoMA explains that the village was not visible from there and that he brought the cypress closer; stars, memory and imagination together shape the image. It should therefore not be read as a photograph of the night sky or a simple illustration of the artist’s illness.
