A little wonder, every day

Seedlessness in cultivated fruit arises in different ways and does not mean the plant cannot be propagated. Seedless watermelons are usually triploid; seed for growing them is produced by crossing parental lines with different chromosome-set numbers. Grape cultivars can be maintained vegetatively, while seedless-grape breeding can use embryo rescue. Mature seeds in fruit, creation of a new cultivar and clonal propagation of an existing one must therefore be distinguished.
