A little wonder, every day

Atmospheric krypton-85 can help track nuclear fuel reprocessing

Krypton-85 can trace some reprocessing releases.

Listen to fact0:00 / —

Krypton-85 is a radioactive gas produced by nuclear fission. It can be released into the atmosphere during reprocessing of spent fuel, so scientists measure it to study such emissions. Because there is a background level and more than one source, a single measurement alone does not identify an exact location or cause.
