Ancient Rome and city names

Rome is often credited as the first city to reach a population of about one million, perhaps in the late first century BCE or the first centuries CE. This is not a precise census: estimates of ancient population are disputed, and some scholars consider the million figure too high. The claim that a city or settlement named Rome/Roma exists on every continent except Antarctica depends on what counts as a “city” and which name variants are included; no authoritative exhaustive list proving it was found.

Ancient Rome’s million-person population is an estimate, not a census.
