Diamond rain on giant planets?

Deep inside some giant planets, high pressure and temperature may turn carbon from methane into graphite and, under even more extreme conditions, diamond crystals that sink. This is a hypothesis supported by laboratory experiments and models, not a direct observation. Cassini detected soot-like products from storms on Saturn, but the mechanism and the carbon’s fate deep inside remain uncertain; suggestions that it dissolves in a liquid interior depend on the planetary model.
