Pope Gregory XIII introduced the 1582 calendar reform, adjusting leap-year rules and accumulated date drift. In the first adopting countries, October 4 was followed by October 15. Weekdays continued sequentially, and countries adopted the calendar at different times. Thus 1582 marks the reform’s beginning rather than a simultaneous worldwide calendar switch.
