Unsafe water and health
Unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene cause a substantial disease burden. WHO estimated that safer WASH services could have prevented about 1.4 million deaths and 74 million disability-adjusted life years in 2019; diarrhoeal diseases accounted for most of this burden. This was about 2.5% of all deaths, not 80%. No reliable current comparison of this combined category with AIDS, malaria, road crashes, and wars together was found. [1–3]
Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene prevent disease and deaths.
