The shift to a heliocentric model
In *De revolutionibus* (1543), Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a model in which Earth moves around the Sun instead of remaining the fixed center of planetary motions. This became a decisive challenge to geocentric astronomy. The Sun is not the center of the entire universe, however, and later observations and theories refined our modern picture of the Solar System.
