In medieval Europe, imported black pepper was a costly commodity, and some places accepted it as payment in kind. English rent records include examples of annual payments in pepper; historical studies also mention pepper taxes and dues in some communities. However, not every “peppercorn rent” was a substantial real payment: over time, a single peppercorn often became a symbolic consideration used to formalize an agreement.
