In many anemonefish, young fish do not yet have a fully mature sex: their gonads contain tissues that can develop into ovaries or testes. Fish mature within a social group where the largest individual is female and her partner is a smaller male. If the female disappears, the male can undergo an irreversible change into a female, and one of the younger fish may later take the male’s place. So “born male” is an oversimplification: more precisely, they first develop along a male pathway, while juvenile sexual maturation depends on social context.
